| Time | With a class of 20-30 it takes about a 50 minute lesson. |
| Advantages | Some students feel uncomfortable making speeches about themselves. Using the cards to write a speech helps these students feel less intimidated. |
| Disadvantages | It's much much faster to ask students to write their speeches in this way. Students
also seem to have more fun. Printing the cards and cutting them out is a bit of work. If you use a paper guillotine it doesn't take too long. You also need to make sure the numbers are printed on the back of the cards. The pdf files are formatted so that everything is centered. |
Lesson 1 - Preparing for the Speech
- Ask students to collect one of each of the five cards.
- Check understanding of these key words.
- Hand out the worksheet.
- Check understanding of the key sentences.
- Tell students to write the words on their cards in the corresponding positions on their worksheet.
- Model an example speech.
Lesson 2 - Speech Presentation
- Students practice individually for 5 minutes.
- Students make pairs and present their speeches to each other.
- Students make groups of 4 or 5 and decide order.
- Student number 1 from each group gives their speech in front of their group.
- Student 1 from each group then rotates to another group and gives their speech again.
- Students rotate one more time and sit down in their original seats.
- Student 2 stands up from each group and repeats the same process, then student 3 etc.
Tips
- Practicing memorization is very important in language learning. Encourage your students to try and memorize their speeches as the lesson progresses.
