| Advantages | Card games are a great fun way to practice a specific target language over and over again. The worksheets are easy to understand and help to reinforce and expand upon the language at the end of the lesson. |
| Disadvantages | There is not a lot of variety of hobbies presented in the cards for this lesson, only eight. Because of this, I include other hobbies in the deck of cards; chess, soccer, etc. I expanded the variety out to about 16 different hobbies and practiced the question form of the language in the class. These cards are somewhere on my website, but I'm not sure are the moment where I put them. I really need to add a search engine function to this site and to finish the clip art page layout. Sorry for the inconvenience. |
Game Preparation
- Read the comic with the class.
- Check understanding.
- Practice the question "Do you .... ?" using the flashcards with the class together. Make sure they understand the meaning and the main grammar points.
Game - Pair Collect
- This card game is basically Go Fish. It is very easy to apply the rules to this game to short conversations with "Yes" and "No" type answer structures. The best way to explain how to play is through a quick demonstration. It sometimes takes a bit of repeating but once students understand the rules it can be adopted to many other short conversations with "Yes" and "No" type answer structures. I use it prolifically and students love it.
- Make groups of 3 to 4 students and sit in a circle around a desk with a deck of hobby cards in the middle.
- The aim of this game is to collect matching pairs.
- Students deal out 1 card each.
- The first student (A) chooses another student (B) and asks, for example, the question, 'Do you play the guitar?'.
- If student (B) is holding the guitar card, then they answer 'Yes, I do.' and give the card to student (A).
- If student (B) is not holding the guitar, then they answer 'No, I don't.' and keep their cards.
- After a student has asked a question, they always pick up a new card from the pack in the middle.
- The game continues around the group to the left.
- If a student, at any time, is able to make a matching pair of cards, then they put the pair down in front of them and the cards are safe.
- The game continues until their are no cards left.
- The winner is the student to have collected the most pairs at the end of the game.
- So the game continues....
