| Advantages |
Cards games are a great way to practice a specific target language. |
| Disadvantages |
I can't really think of any at the moment. |
Game Preparation
- Practice the language by reading the short comic on the worksheet with the class together.
Make sure they understand the meaning and the main grammar points and read it together again.
- Use worksheet 2 to clarify and reinforce the grammar.
- Get students to fill in the second page of the worksheet. Check they have done it correctly and help those that need help.
- I have described 2 possible games which you can use in class to practice the language. I tend to lean toward the second game.
Game - Collect the Cards
- Make groups of about 4 and sit in a circle around a desk with 48 cards (2 pages of the game cards printout) in a pile in the middle.
- Very simply, students must collect all the different cards on their worksheet and practice the sentences as they do.
- Students take turns picking up a card, if it is a card they haven't yet collected, they say the sentence, ie."This is your car.",
and keep the card.
- If it is a card they have already collected, they still have to say the sentence, but must return the card
to the bottom of the pack. More advanced groups could say, "This is not your car." and return the card.
- The first student to collect all the cards is the winner.
- A simple game but most groups seem to enjoy it.
Game - Guess the Card
- This game is described within the context of another 1st grade lesson practicing
the question What's this?.
This language can easily be altered to suit this lesson as well.
What's one more great thing about being bald?
You can play a trick and lie about your hair colour.
