Level Beginner
Age 8-12
Number of Players A classroom activity
Object This is a fun way for young kids to practice a short conversation. Can get pretty noisy, but Primary School kids love it. The aim is to use the target language to find other students holding the same card.
Language Skills memory, gesture, speaking, listening, communication
Resources 6-8 different kinds of picture cards, 1 picture card for each student.
Time 10 minutes.
Advantages Lots of fun. Great for 2-4 line conversations.
Disadvantages A little unfair if you have a student number which doesn't divide in groups evenly, ie 29. Nobody ever seems too concerned though.
How to play...
  • Hand out one card to each student. (If there are 8 kinds of cards, then in a class of 32 students, groups of 4 students will be holding the same card.
  • Tell them to not show each other their card.
  • Tell the students to memorize their own card and put in their pocket.
  • Students then use the main language of the lesson to search for all the other students holding the same card as them.
  • For example.
Student 1: What is your favourite fruit?
Student 2: Banana. What is your favourite fruit?
    Student 1: Peach.
  • When two students have found each other, they speak the language as one person, when speaking to another student.
  • When the students have found everyone in their group, they sit down. The first group to sit down is the winning group.
